  • 1 large round loaf of crusty bread (sourdough recommended)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1 cup shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, chives, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Make diagonal cuts across the top of the bread about 1 inch apart without slicing all the way through.
  4. Spread the garlic butter mixture generously between each cut.
  5. If using cheese, sprinkle it between the cuts as well.
  6. Wrap the loaf in aluminum foil with the top slightly open and place it on a baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes; then unwrap the top and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until golden brown.
