  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour or cornstarch/tapioca for gluten-free option
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for the topping
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar for the topping
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar for the topping
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ½ tsp cinnamon for the topping
  • Pinch of salt for the topping
  • Optional: ¼ cup chopped pecans or old-fashioned oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare your pie shell on a baking sheet.
  3. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla extract. Let sit for 10-15 minutes to form syrup.
  4. For the crumb topping, mix flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt in another bowl. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  5. Pour apple filling into the prepared pie shell and sprinkle crumb topping evenly over.
  6. Bake for 50–60 minutes until the topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
