  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • For caramel: 9 tbsp unsalted butter, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1 cup heavy cream, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, and 1/4 tsp salt.
  • For frosting: 8 oz cream cheese and 2 cups powdered sugar.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the brown butter by melting unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden brown and nutty.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl.
  3. In a large bowl, combine browned butter with granulated and brown sugars; beat in eggs one at a time along with vanilla and buttermilk.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture; stir gently until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake at 350°F for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Make the caramel filling by melting butter in a saucepan; stir in brown sugar and heavy cream until bubbly. Simmer for about 5 minutes; remove from heat and add vanilla.
  7. Prepare cream cheese frosting by beating cold cream cheese until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar until creamy.
  8. Once cooled, layer cakes with caramel filling between each layer and frost with cream cheese frosting.
